« AFP has been criticised (in France) about not qualifying Hamas as a terrorist organisation (a topic we discussed at length at our previous meeting). I was asked to write an article explaining this editorial policy, which was published in French and English in the form of a press release. As you can imagine, it provoked quite a lot of reaction. It was generally well received by other journalists, but I did get the occasional rude comment on social media and there was some political blowback in France (particularly over the reference to Mandela, who is actually the best possible example of why we do not make these kinds of value judgements). Of course I was not comparing him to Hamas, it was to illustrate the general principle. »
