In 2018, Margo and NPO hosted the Annual ONO Conference in The Netherlands, on the theme of “Building Trust – Tools and Ideas for ombuds, Public Editors and Standards Editors to rebuild public belief in news media”.
Margo Smit took over as President of ONO in June 2021.

Previous to becoming President, Margo had been the Treasurer of ONO and a long-standing Board Member,
Margo is the Ombuds for journalism content at NPO, the public broadcaster of The Netherlands. You can find her website here: https://ombudsman.npo.nl/
She also has a long history as a distinguished investigative reporter and film-maker on Dutch Public TV. She is Vice-Chair of the Global Investigative Journalism Network.
